Jack Sheppard 3/27: The Storm
The third etching entitled 'The Storm' shows a melodramatic scene of foaming water and pelting rain at London Bridge, depicting the night Wood decides to adopt the infant Sheppard.
Jack Sheppard is a novel by William Harrison Ainsworth which was published in serial form in Bentley's Miscellany from 1839-40 with illustrations by George Cruikshank. It is derived from a true-life story of an eighteenth-century criminal who escaped from prison four times before being caught and hanged.
Jack Sheppard was very popular and was published at the same time as Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist.
