James I Coronation medal
This silver medal was struck for distribution at the King's coronation on 25 1603, the first time an English coronation was marked in this way. It celebrated James VI of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots, also becoming James I of England. It bears the bust of James I, and the legend in Latin 'James I, Caesar Augustus of Britain, Caesar the heir of the Caesars, presents this medal'. On the reverse the legend translates as 'Behold the beacon and safety of the people'.
