Commemorative plate
Souvenir plate issued to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The plate also celebrates Britain's imperial power and the productivity and wealth of its Empire 'on which the sun never sets'. The lead-glazed plate, octagonal in shape, is transfer printed with royal and imperial references and symbols. In the centre is a coloured transfer print of Britainnia surrounded by figures representing the dominions flanked by roundel profile portraits of the Queen and her son Edward, Prince of Wales. Beneath is a map of the world coloured to show the extent of Britain's imperial power together with statistics on trade and populations. In the four corners are printed the crests of Australia, Canada, Cape Colony & India.
