Tile, imbrex
Two fragments of a fired clay imbrex (roof tile) from the site of the Roman fort at Noble Street, City of London. Roof tiles came in two standard types; one with angled sides that fitted alongside the next tile (tegula), while a curved tile (imbrex) of the same length was mortared over the joint to make it waterproof.
The surface is stamped with CL, a portion of the official stamp CLBR (Classis Britannica) meaning ‘British Fleet'. This stamp indicates the tile is linked to the ancient Roman navy. The Classis Britannica operated in the zone of Britain under Roman rule, the Channel and the northern coast of the Continent as far as the mouth of the Rhine.
