Ring, finger ring, mourning ring
Gold finger ring in the form of a buckled belt inset with tightly braided hair. Inscribed on the inside is 'Maria Brown Obt. 22 Augt. 1853 Aet 77’. This ring commemorates the death of Maria Brown and was worn in memory of her. Locks of plaited or woven hair were incorporated in jewellery as reminders of loved ones or the dead.
