Brooch, penannular brooch
A copper alloy penannular brooch. Brooch of the 'Omega' type form, terminating in recurved ends, which rest at approximately 180 degrees to the main body. Decorated along the length of the body with incised transverse notches. The pin remains in situ, looped to the hoop. (Fowler, penannular B type).
Brooches were used like safety pins, buttons and zips are used today. They were functional and held garments together. They were also made to be decorative and often had coloured enamels along the bow. Novelty brooches were also popular.
