Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1954
The Pool of London
The Pool of London stretches from London Bridge to just beyond Tower Bridge.
Large cranes dominate Mendez's dense industrial landscape. Based on a number of drawings, the landmarks in this final work are rearranged to suit the composition. Rather than idealising the Thames riverside, the artist represents it as a working river. It is a transitional work both in terms of the artist's output and the general artistic trend in London in the 1950s.
London-born Mendez was a painter, muralist and teacher. He studied in London before teaching part-time, and later full-time, at the Camberwell School of Art.
