Buddha statue
The London Buddhist Vihara donated this statue of Buddha to the Museum, commenting that: 'The Buddha is not worshipped as a god, but he is offered the highest respect as the peerless teacher. A Buddha image can be used to evoke in our minds the supreme qualities of wisdom and compassion which he perfected over 2500 years ago and which we strive to emulate.' The London Buddhist Vihara is a centre for the Theravada branch of Buddhism. Established in 1926 by monks from Sri Lanka, the monastery is now located in Chiswick.
