Flagon, small globular flagon

A natural green glass flagon. Moderate quality glass: bubbles are few in body but numerous and elongated in neck. Iridescence on lower body; weathering mainly confined to a large patch on upper body at junction with neck. Parts present: complete (rim, neck, body, handle, base). Rim plain, everted and fire-rounded, irregular; quite thick. Rod handle, laid on shoulder and curved up in a quarter circle to touch neck at the mid-point. Globular body. Base pushed up to a low dome, with scar from a blowing iron or glass-tipped punty 15 mm across.

This rare form of small flagon has rarely been found outside Britain. Finds from Burgh Castle, Winchester (Lankhills) and elsewhere suggest a late 4th-century date (consistent with other finds from this context). From B538, an inhumation burial, with pottery datable to 250 or later, and a crossbow brooch and belt set datable to the 2nd half of the 4th century or later.
