The Mermaid
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for the Mermaid tavern in Billingsgate, Billingsgate Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 200; Obv inscription: THE.MAIRMEAD.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mermaid (in field); Rev inscription: AT.BILLIN.GATE.1650 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = V.I.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Valentine Hayward Junior was granted a lease of the Mermaid tavern in 1650 (Fire Court 1966-, i.121). See also token number 6557 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. There is another token for the Mermaid tavern at Billingsgate in the museum collection, NN16491, though from a different issuer.
