Bowl
Part of a decorated samian bowl, form Dragendorff 29 made in one of the potteries in South Gaul. The upper zone is decorated with scrolls of an early type, with continuous gadroons around lower zone. This is one of the earliest pieces of decorated samian known from London, probably made before the Romans arrived. It was found inside the Roman city, so may have belonged to one of the early settlers. But it could also represent trade between Gaul and Britain before AD43. Samian ware is high-quality Roman tableware made in Gaul (modern-day France) and exported throughout the empire. See Oswald & Pryce, 1928, no 17.
