William Warner issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business on the Upper Ground, Southwark.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Southwark number 492; Obv inscription: WILLIAM.WARNER.IN.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An angel 1669 (date either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: VPER.GROVND.IN.SOVTHWARK (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / W.R.W. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
