The Lion
John Annis issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business near Coal Stairs, in Shadwell, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Middlesex number 170; Obv inscription: IOHN.ANNIS.IN.SHADWELL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion passant (in field); Rev inscription: NEERE.COALE.STAIRS.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Shadwell lay in Stepney, Middlesex; the area is now part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
