The Nag's Head and Gridiron
Edward Foster, a leather seller, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Corner Shop, in Panyer Alley, ward of Farringdon Within, City of London. The gridiron depicted on the token, is a type of grill used for cooking meat and other food over the fire.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2180; Obv inscription: EDW. FOSTER. LETHERSELER. AT. YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A nag's head upon a gridiron (in field); Rev inscription: CORNER. SHOPP. IN. PANIER. ALLEY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
