The Hope
Richard James issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Nightingale Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2072; Obv inscription: RICHARD.IAMES.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / R (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: NIGHTINGALE.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Hope leaning on anchor (in field).
The token is stamped with an 'R' in the field, this is the makers mark of John Ramage, the Kings moneyer. See also token numbers 8330a and 8330b in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 62, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VIII - Middlesex and Uncertain Pieces. Nightingale Lane (now Thomas More Street), East Smithfield, lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
