The Lion
Robert Peete issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Lion, against Guildhall Gate, Guildhall Yard.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1299; Obv inscription: ROBERT. PEETE. OVER. AGAINST (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant (in field); Rev inscription: GVILD.HALL.GATE.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer may be ?Robert Peat of St Lawrence Jewry, Leatherseller and Clothworker, see Percival Boyd, [Inhabitants of London]. Society of Genealogists, MS. 26461.
