The Mitre
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Mitre, in New Fish Street (now Fish Street Hill).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2012; Obv inscription: AT.THE.MITER.IN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mitre (in field); Rev inscription: NEW.FISH.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.A.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is known to be William Harman, from an advertisement from the Mercurius Publicus, '...Whoever gives notice of the Gelding to Mr. William Harman at the Miter in new Fish-street...shall have 40s. for his paines (Mercurius Publicus, October 3-10, 1661, p.632, as cited in London Number 2012 in George C. Williamson, Trade Tokens issued in the Seventeenth Century; a new and revised edition of Wiliam Boyne's work (London, 1889)).
