The Willi[am] Sommers
This trade token, worth a half penny, was issued for a business at the sign of William Sommers, in Old Fish Street (now Knightrider Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2147; Obv inscription: AT.YE.WILL.SOMERS. BACKSIDE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Will Somers in a long gown and hat blowing a horn OB (initials in field to right of device, in field); Rev inscription: OVLD. FISH. STREET. 1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.M.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
William Sommers, depicted on the sign at the issuing business, was a court fool, at the court of Henry VIII, see Oxford DIctionary of National Biography (J. R.
