The Three Golden Lions
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the sign of the Three Golden Lions in Cornhill, Cornhill Ward, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 716 (variation); Obv inscription: THE.3.GOLDEN.LYONS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three lions passant (in field); Rev inscription: IN.CORNHILL.1660 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = S.C (in field, in Roman capitals).
There is an earlier issue of this token in the museum collection, NN16718. Books are known to have been published at this premises, though it is not clear whether the issuer was a stationer, see J. H. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 366. See also token number 6810 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London.
