Post-Medieval — Mid 17th century; 1648-1673; 1666
Unknown
William Milton, a meal man (someone who deals in meal crops, such as oats), issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in the Barbican.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 119; Obv inscription: WILLIAM.MILTON (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = MEAL / MAN (in two lines of Roman capitals); Rev inscription: IN.BARBICAN.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.E.M. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, NN16450. The Barbican is in Aldersgate Ward and the ward of Cripplegate Without, in the City of London.
