The Bunch of Grapes
Thomas May issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Bunch of Grapes, in Rotherhithe, Surrey.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Surrey number 270; Obv inscription: THOMAS. MAY .AT. YE. BVNCH. OF (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A bunch of grapes (in field); Rev inscription: GRAPES.IN.REDERIFE.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / T.E.M. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
Rotherhithe formerly formed part of Surrey, it now lies within the London Borough of Southwark.
