Copper, copper alloy, mirror, lid mirror
A copper alloy mirror case decorated with a bust in relief at centre, facing right, possibly Emperor Nero, ruler of the Roman Empire, AD 54-68. The bust is surrounded by a band of concentric lines.
Recovered from the eastern Roman cemetery at West Tenter Street, E1.
A mirror lid would have been placed over the surface of the mirror when not in use to protect it. In the Roman period some mirrors were made of glass, but many were also made of silver or bronze, the surface of which was tinned and polished to a 'mirror' finish.
