Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; early 16th century
The Virgin Mary
Pilgrim souvenir of the Virgin Mary from an unknown shrine. This is a miniature openwork shrine with an arch or doorway in the centre. The shrine would have had a tiny figure of the Virgin Mary and Child to stand in this doorway (now missing). Above the door is a line of seven narrow arches and on each side is an openwork floral design. Miniature shrines were made at the beginning of the 16th century as an aid to devotion. They seem to have been popular as several fragments of shrines have been found in London.
