Saxon & Medieval — Saxon
Pin
This pin is made from bone, a material readily available in the medieval period. It is missing part of the head, presumably chipped off by accident. The head of this pin is flat and square, with a perforation towards the bottom of the head. There is a curved abstract decoration towards the top of the pin. The pin is straight, and the shaft is round. Along the shaft, there is a bulge. This was to help the pin stay fastened in place. Before the adoption of buttons, pins were mostly used to fasten loose clothing, in addition to brooches, straps and ties.
