Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval-Tudor; late 15th - mid 16th century
Cauldron
Copper alloy cauldron used for cooking. It has three feet, which are shaped like claws, two angular handles and a round body. In medieval times, most domestic cooking was over an open fire, so cauldrons and skillets had tripod feet to raise them above the hearth. Broken pots were occasionally used as lids. Only the wealthy could afford purpose-built ovens and hearths: the poor had only basic cooking facilities or none at all.
