Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; late 13th-14th century
Mount
Large mount from a horse harness. It has a barbed quatrefoil shape and is decorated with a shield bearing the arms of the Earls of Hereford. There are dragons around the shield with traces of enamel. The mount was fixed to the horse harness with four large rivets with domed heads. The Earls of Hereford were hereditary 'constables' of England from 1176 to 1372 and were responsible for organising tournaments and for matters of chivalry.
