Post-Medieval — Tudor; 16th century
Scabbard
Near complete leather scabbard; possibly curving slightly towards its end. The tip and lower part of the scabbard have been cut off. The wooden lining is still in situ. There is a boss or ridge protruding from the front c. 50mm from the top, a feature found on other scabbards of this date. The top edge of the scabbard has been folded in. The front and back have a vertical impressed line down each side and the front is also decorated with stamped circles joined by crescent or shell-like motifs. Similar motifs are present on two of the scabbards from the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 (nos 81A1883 and 80A0549, Hildred et al, 2011, 795, fig 9.72 and 796, fig 9.73). The back has a centre back seam with flesh/grain stitch holes.
The boss or ridge would have helped to prevent the loops that suspended the scabbard from the belt from coming off and is found on examples from the Mary Rose, sunk in 1545 (for example, scabbard 81A1734 (Hildred et al, 2011, 795)).
