Saxon & Medieval — Saxo-Norman; 10th-11th century
Sheath
Leather scramasax sheath with impressed panels of intricate interlace decoration on the front and back. There is a concave cut away part way along the straight edge. The sheath is formed of a piece of leather folded over and secured along the open side by a row of at least nineteen metal rivets (now missing). A scramasax was a large hunting knife or weapon and this sheath is a rare survival from London. This type of sheath would have hung horizontally across the waist.
