Roman — Roman; 2nd century
Sculpture, statue
The youthful female head is shown with hair parted on either side of the forehead, waved over the brows and brought in a broad roll round the back of the head in a style no later than the Julio-Claudian period. The features belie little emotion: eyes are not drilled, but expression may have been painted on; the lips are closed with no hint of either smile or frown; the brow is smooth. The ears are carefully defined.
The idealised features are reminiscent of the Aphrodite of Knidos, carved by Praxiteles, and indeed this may be a late classical copy of the famous statue. More likely, this is a portrait following contemporary Imperial fashions, or it could be intended for the head of a goddess.
It was carved in 2nd century A.D.
