The Shipwrights' Arms
Mary Berry issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her business at Rotherhithe, Surrey.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Surrey number 245; Obv inscription: MARY.BERRY.AT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: REDERIF.WALL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Shipwrights' arms (in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights are: Azure in a sea proper the hull of a ship or, and for difference in the dexter chief point a sword erect point upwards of the last, on a chief argent a cross gules charged with a lion passant guardant (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Rotherhithe formerly formed part of Surrey, it now lies within the London Borough of Southwark.
