The King's Barge House
Thomas Lamb, a salter (someone who's trade involved the use of salt and working with chemicals for use in food), issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the King's Barge House on the Upper Ground, Southwark.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Southwark number 489; Obv inscription: THO.LAMBE.SALTER.AT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Vintners' arms (in field); Rev inscription: YE.KINGS.BARGE.HOVSE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.M.L. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Vintners are: Sable a chevron between three tuns argent (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
