The Weaver's Arms
John Poor issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the King's Bench, Southwark.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Southwark number 282; Obv inscription: IOHN.POOR.IN.THE.KINGS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Weavers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: BENCH.IN.SOVTHWARK (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Weavers are: Azure on a chevron argent between three leopards' heads each holding in the mouth a shuttle, or three roses gules (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
