The Carpenters' Arms
John Kemp issued this trade token, worth a half penny, upon Horsly Down, Southwark.
Boyne & Williamson (1891) reference Southwark number 261; Obv inscription: IOHN.KEMP.LIVEING (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Carpenters' arms (in field); Rev inscription: VPPON.HORSLY.DOWN.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Carpenters are: Argent a chevron engrailed between three pairs of compasses sable (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
