Saxon & Medieval — Modern; 20th century
Replica, seal matrix
This is a modern replica of the original mid-14th century silver seal die (which is in the British Museum) found in the Thames at Queenhithe. It shows the three lions of the Royal Arms of England, with four swords around and the inscription 'S: DNI: EDWARDI: REG: ANGL: IN: PORTV: LONDONIARV' ('Seal of Lord Edward King of England in the Port of London'). It formed one side of a two-part seal - the other side would have read 'PRO LANIS ET COREIS LIBERTANDIS' ('for the delivery of wool and hides'). It would have been used on receipts issued for payment of customs duty on exporting wool and hides. Duty was levied at Custom House near the Tower of London, where Geoffrey Chaucer was Controller of Customs.
