The Bell
Thomas Granborough issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Whitecross Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3450; Obv inscription: THOMAS.GRANBROO.1667 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A bell (in field); Rev inscription: IN.WHITE.CROSS.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Whitecross Street lay in the ward of Cripplegate Without, in the City of London, and the Borough of Finsbury, Middlesex; the street is now part of Cripplegate Ward in the City of London, and the London Borough of Islington.
