The Windmill
John Slater, a mealman (someone who deals in meal crops, such as oats), issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at Wapping New Stairs, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3342; Obv inscription: IOHN.SLATER.MEALMAN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: AT.WAPPING.NEW.STARES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A windmill (in field).

Wapping New Stairs, were stairs running down to the Thames, which lay in Wapping, Middlesex; the area is now part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
