John Wickes, a baker, issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Friar's Lane, Thames Street (now Upper Thames Street and Lower Thames Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3128; Obv inscription: IOHN.WICKES.BAKER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.M.W. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: THAMES.STREETE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = FRYER / LANE (in two lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Fryers Lane (later Friar's Alley), lay south of Thames Street (now upper Thames Street), by Greenwich Street, in Dowgate Ward and Vintry Ward, in the City of London, see Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918).
