The Lion
John Battell issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the Lion tavern, at Temple Bar.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3032; Obv inscription: IOHN.BATTELL.AT.LION (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant within a shield (in field); Rev inscription: TAVERN.AT.TEMPLE.BAR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.D.B. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Temple Bar formed a divisional bar between the ward of Farringdon, in the City of London, and Westminster, Middlesex; the area that lay in Westminster, now lies in the City of Westminster.
