The Maypole
Nathaniel Barrs issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the sign of the Maypole, in Spitalfieds, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2929; Obv inscription: NATHANIEL.BARRS.AT.YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A maypole (in field); Rev inscription: IN.SPITTLE.FIELDS.1669 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals).
Spitalfields lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of Stepney, Middlesex.
