The Rose
Lionel Bufkine issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in West Smithfield near the Cloth Fair Gate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2843; Obv inscription: LIONELL.BVFKINE.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three roses on a stalk (in field); Rev inscription: IN.WEST.SMITHFEILD.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = NEER / CLOTH / FAIRE / GATE (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Cloth Fair runs east off West Smithfield, and the Cloth Fair Gate, used to stand at this junction, in the ward of Farringdon Without, City of London.
