The Goat
Francis Blechinden, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business, the Goat tavern, in West Smithfield, ward of Farringdon Without, City of London.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2841; Obv inscription: FRANCIS. BLECHIN[....] [Boyne has BLECHLEY]. AT. THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A goat (in field); Rev inscription: [....]IN.WEST.SMITH.FEILD (around field, in Roman capitals, in field) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / 1666 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The full name of the issuer and the nature of the business has been identified in token number 7808 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London, from another example of this token.
