The Post House Coffee House
Jphn Lansdell issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business, the Post House Coffee House.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2750A; Obv inscription: John / Lansdell at / y. post house / Coffee. house (in four lines of cursive script, in field); Rev inscription: HIS HALF / PENY (in two lines of Roman capitals, either side of bust, in field) Device = A Turk's bust in profile holding a coffee cup (in field)
Though the location of issue is not on the token, another example of a half penny token from this issuer, NN18697, in the museum collection, provides us with this information. See also token number 7159 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London, and, Bryant Lillywhite, London Coffee Houses (London, 1963), no. 708. Scalding Alley (now St Mildred's Court, lies to the north of Poultry, in Broad Street Ward, and Cheap Ward, in the City of London.
