The St. Thomas Apostle
George Spencer, a silk dyer, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in the back side of St Thomas Apostle's.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2737; Obv inscription: GEORGE.SPENCER.BACKSIDE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Dyers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: ST.THOMAS.APOSTLE.SILK.DIER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENNY / G.A.S. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Dyers are: Sable a chevron engrailed argent between three bags of madder argent corded (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). St Thomas Apostles, later Little St Thomas Apostles, lay off Bow Lane, in Cordwainer Ward, and Vintry Ward, in the City of London, it was removed for the construction of the western extensino of Cannon Street, in 1865, see Henry A.
