The Wheatsheaf

This trade token, worth a half penny, was issued for a meal shop (where meal crops such as oats were sold), in St Swithin's Lane.

Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2731; Obv inscription: AT.THE.MEALE.SHOPP (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A wheatsheaf I.C (in initials in Roman capitals on either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: IN.SWETHINS.LANE.1666 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIR / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).

St Swithin's Lane runs south off King William Street, to Cannon Street, in Walbrook Ward, in the City of London; at the time of issue the street ran further north in to Langbourn ward, but this portion was demolished for the creation of King WIlliam Street in 1832, see Henry A.
