The Red Bull
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Red Bull, behind St Nicholas Shambles (now Newgate Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1899) reference London number 2705; Obv inscription: THE.READ.BVLL.BEHIND (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A bull (in field); Rev inscription: S.NICKLES.SHAMBLES (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.A.E. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
St Nicholas Shambles Lane, was an early portion of what is now Newgate Street, it lay in the ward of Farringdon Within, in the City of London, see Henry A. Harben, A Dictionary of London (London, 1918).
