The Black Spread Eagle
Joseph Lee issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Black Double-Headed Eagle, in St Martin's, Aldersgate.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2648A; Obv inscription: IOSEPH.LEE.AT.YE.BLACK (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A double-headed eagle (in field); Rev inscription: IN.ST.MARTINS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
