The George and Dragon
John Hayward, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Helmet Court (off Butcher Row).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1339; Obv inscription: IOHN. HAWARD. IN. HELMET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: COVRT.IN.ST.KATHERNS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = St George and the dragon (in field).
See also, NN17628, in the museum collection. Helmet Court lay to the west of Butcher Row, it was removed for the construction of St Katherine's Docks in 1827 (see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918)); area lies in the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
