The Man in the Wood
John Atwood issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Man in the Wood, in Rose Lane, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2393; Obv inscription: IOHN. ATWOOD. IN. ROSE. LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: THE.MAN.IN.THE.WOOD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A man standing by some trees (in field).

Rose Lane, lay off White horse Street (now White Horse Road), in Stpney, Middlesex. The area is now part of the district of Ratcliff, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
