The Turk's Head
Alexander Hankin issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Red Cross Street.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2384; Obv inscription: ALEXANDER.HANKIN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A Turk's head (in field); Rev inscription: IN.REDCROSSE.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A.M.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The depiction of the Turk's Head on the token, suggests the business was a coffee house; the Turk's Head being a common sing for coffee houses representing the place from which the produce came. Red Cross Street, ran north off Fore Street towards the Barbican, in the ward of Cripplegate Without (now Cripplegate Ward), in the City of London.
