The Salters' Arms
Baldwin Davis, a tallow chadler, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business in Red Cross Street (area north of Fore Street).
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2377; Obv inscription: BALDWIN. DAVIS. IN. RED. CROS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Salters' arms (in field); Rev inscription: STREET.TALLOW.CHANDLER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = 1666, a stick of candles HIS. HALF / PENY (date at top above sign, text in two lines of Roman capitals at bottom, all in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Salters are: Party per chevron Azure and Gules three covered salts Argent garnished Or, the salt shedding on both sides of the salts Argent (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Red Cross Street, ran north off Fore Street towards the Barbican, in the ward of Cripplegate Without (now Cripplegate Ward), in the City of London.
